Phantom, Cithaerias
pireta (Stoll,
1780), Intro: The blushing phantom, is a species of butterfly of the
family Nymphalidae. It is found from Mexico south to
South America.
Habitats: which grows in
the dark understory areas in very humid habitats.
Implications for palatability and mimicry are
discussed with respect to the bright colors of
the adults of this and related genera.

The early stages of Cithaerias pireta are described from a Costa Rican
lowland rain forest on the Caribbean slope.
The caterpillars: Had
five instars and the total cycle from egg to
butterfly eclosion lasted 66 days.
The
host plant: Is Heart-leaf philodendron, Philodendron
herbaceum (Arum, Areaceae family).
Distribution: It is found
from
Central America from Honduras, to the Andes
eastern slopes to Bolivia and to Suriname and
French Guiana, the Amazon in northeastern South
America.
