Until recently the Crambidae and Pyralidae were grouped together as Pyralidae family, but the most recent revision by Munroe & Solis in 1999 classifies both as full families within the superfamily Pyraloidea.

The Crambidae family comprises of about 11,630 known species worldwide, although the true number must be considerably higher, as these moths are generally small and a high percentage of them are dull and inconspicuous. The family is divided into 18 subfamilies.

The Pyralidae family comprises of about 6,150 known species worldwide, although the true number must be considerably higher, as these moths are generally small and a high percentage of them are dull and inconspicuous. The family is divided into 5 subfamilies.

The taxonomy of the Pyralidae and Crambidae however are both still in disarray and the current classification is certain to change as more is learnt.

Sematuirid Moths, Mania lunus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a moth of the family Sematuridae, found in forests of Central and South America, where it occurs from Mexico to Brazil.

The larvae of
Mania lunus were reared in Costa Rica in 2001 and are a bit similar to those of Coronidia, being well camouflaged but bearing small projections rather than long spines one the dorsal surface. Host plants recorded were Pracaxi fruit oil, Pentaclethra macroloba (Fabaceae) and Syzygium, Syzygium longifolium (Myrtaceae).

The world's most dangerous insect

Bullet Ant, Paraponera clavata

Bullet Ant, Paraponera clavata. Suapi 1400 m.h. d. 7 February 2012. Photographer; Lars Andersen

Bullet Ant, Paraponera clavata is a species of ant named after its most powerful and potent sting in the world! It inhabits humid lowland rainforest to mountain rainforest from Nicaragua to Paraguay in America. The bullet ant is called "hormiga veinticuatro" by the locals, referring to the 24 hours of burning pain that follow after being stung.

The pain is indescribable, the nerves become paralyzed as one arm hanging slack down for over a day, so you think you lose your arm? I have tried in Coroico, Bolivia back in January 2005, a pain I never forget!

And I have the following year in Bolivia, entered into a Bullet Ant sticking me in the ankle, so I immediately writhed myself around in pain afterwards, so it is becoming crazy! You must have had a good physical strength to endure this pain, children and elderly people can actually die after being stung by this devil.
