Cascada de la Serpente view 1275 m., Where they
walked down to streams in 935m. where they saw

Nikolaj has photographed. It's not every day, you
can meet seven morphos species!
Was told by Peter over the phone that just before
the stream met the army ants that passed over the
path of several tracks. Though they ran fast over
them, it was in the water right away to get rid
of the biting and stinging soldiers army ants
whose stings really make painful.

Hi Lars
Andersen, Annamaria d'Abrera & Bálint, 2001 is
valid according Opinion 2358 (Case 3458),
Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 72(2) June 2015.
The Commission confirms the availability of the
generic names proposed in dAbrera (2001).
Consequently, Lamasina Robbins, 2002 is its junior
synonym.
The wing pattern of Annamaria rhaptissima (Johnson, 1991) is completely
different than A. ganimedes one, in both sexes. Lastly, B. saphonota (Constantino, Salazar & K.
Johnson, 1993) does not belong to Annamaria but to Brevianta.

Aesculapian False Coral
Snake in
Bolivia
Henrik
Bringsøe; On a
journey to Bolivia in February 2022, I saw a number of reptiles and
amphibians, however, finding such species in
Bolivia is difficult and time-consuming. Our base
was in Caranavi in the lowlands.
On a trip to the picturesque waterfall Rincón
del Tigre near Taipiplaya, in an altitude of
approx. 1350 metres, I was fortunate to find a
colourful snake which mimics the dangerous coral
snakes.
A coral snake or false
coral snake.
It is called Aesculapian False
Coral Snake, Erythrolamprus
aesculapii (Linnaeus,
1758).
It is the Bolivian
subspecies Erythrolamprus aesculapii ssp. tetrazona Jan, 1863, which has black rings
in groups of four, whereas the black rings appear
in pairs in the large South and Central American
distribution of the other subspecies of E. aesculapii.
The snout of slightly
similar dangerous coral snakes in Bolivia, the
species complex of Micrurus lemniscatus (Linnaeus, 1758), is completely
black, whereas that of E. aesculapii also contains light elements.
Furthermore, in false coral snakes a loreal scale
between the eye and nostril is present. More
specifically, the loreal is located between the
preoculars and the nasals. A loreal is absent in
true coral snakes.
The phenomenon of a harmless species imitating a
lethal species is called Batesian mimicry.
The genus Erythrolamprus is rear-fanged and its venom is
mild. These snakes are not particularly
aggressive and are considered harmless to humans.

aesculapii on facebook

Snake
Mimic Sphinx, Hemeroplanes triptolemus (Cramer, 1779).
Rio Broncini, Caranavi, Yungas, Bolivia January 17, 2022. Photographer; Henrik Bringsøe
A particularly
distinctive mimicry of a snake involves the Snake Mimic Sphinx, Hemeroplanes triptolemus (Cramer, 1779) which mimics
especially palm pitvipers, the genus Bothriechis. But it is a generalised mimicry
which most probably also pertains to many other
serpents.
Is found in tropical America from Costa Rica to
northern Argentina.
In its larval form, the Hemeroplanes
triptolemus is
capable of expanding its anterior body segments
to give it the appearance of a snake, complete
with eye patches. This snake mimicry extends even
to the point where it will harmlessly strike at
potential predators as birds, reptiles and
amphibians.
The larva lives on Mesechites trifida in dogbane,
Apocynaceae familie.
