Amerikansk Snudesommerfugl/American snout, Libytheana carinenta (Cramer, 1777). Hamilton,
Ontario, Canada d. 30 august 2024. Photographer: Jesper Kristensen
American Snout, Libytheana
carinenta (Cramer, 1777) is a member of the
subfamily Libytheinae in the family Nymphalidae.
Flight time: Migrations occur from June to
October and are thought to be triggered by
drought followed by heavy summer rains: the
droughts reduce a parasitoid that would otherwise
limit butterfly populations, whereas the rain
induces Spiny Hackberry, Celtis
ehrenbergiana to grow new leaves that provide
food for caterpillars . Furthermore, while the
drought sends the butterflies into a sort of
hibernation, the rain brings them out all at once
to lay eggs, causing a population explosion. In
Texas.
Larval host plants: Spiny Hackberry, Celtis
ehrenbergiana. Are Celtis species on which the
eggs are laid singly.
Traits: Massive migrations, often attract
attention in Texas and Mexican newspapers.
Migratory: This species is known to be migratory,
and some years the migrations are so huge that
the sky darkens in some places. Migrations from
southern Texas to the north occur at irregular
intervals as southern populations explode, often
affecting San Antonio, the Texas Hill Country,
and Austin. Other migrations have been observed
in Arizona, Kansas, and the Lake Erie Islands.
Distribution: Libytheana carinenta is found in both North
and South America and is known to be migratory.
This species is found in both North and South
America. The other species in the genus are
restricted to the Caribbean.

World distribution:
American Snout, Libytheana
carinenta (Cramer, 1777).
Amerikanske Snudesommerfugl, Libytheana
carinenta (Cramer, 1777) er medlem af
underfamilien Libytheinae i familien med Takvinger, Nymphalidae. Denne art findes i
både Nord- og Sydamerika.
Flyvetid:
sommerfuglebestandene, hvorimod regnen inducerer Spiny
Hackberry, Celtis
befolkningseksplosion. I Texas.
Andre
migrationer er blevet observeret i Arizona,
Kansas og Lake Erie Islands.
