Cardinal:
a large fritillary
butterfly with dark red to pink on the forewing
below.
Found on the Canary islands, North Africa,
southern Europe and most islands in the
Mediterranean. Turkey and the Middle East,
Iraq, Iran, southern Russia, Kazakhstan,
Afghanistan, northern Pakistan to northern India. |

Silver-washed
Fritillary: found in open
woodland at low altitude in most of Europe except
northern England, northern Scandinavia, the Faroe
Islands and Iceland, southern Spain and southern
Portugal. |
The
female comes in two forms, the usual and a
gray-green with purple glow; f. valesina / syn.: f. valezina
found
in most of Europe. But unknown in North Africa
and Sardinia. |
ssp. immaculata; from Sardinia
and Corsica has more golden glow on rear wing
below with reduced silver stripes. |
ssp. dives; In Algeria
there dives with well
developed black spots on upside. On the rear
wing below is silver stripes are usually replaced
with yellow-green stripes. |

Fritillary: found in open forests
at low altitudes from eastern Europe, central and
southern parts of the Urals, South and West
Siberia, northwestern Kazakhstan, Amur and Japan.
Rare as a migratory visitor to Denmark and
Sweden. |

Green Fritillary: Is one of the
largest fritillary butterflies found in meadows
up in the Cedar forests of the western Atlas
Mountains in Morocco.
ssp excelsior found in the
western Rif Occidental. 1200-1500 m. altitudes.
ssp lyauteyi exist in the
region of Ifrane mountains. 1500-1800 m.
altitudes. |

and grasslands throughout Europe including
England, Ireland, Orkney and the European part of
Turkey. Deficiencies in the Mediterranean
islands except Sicily. Missing also in Iceland
and the Faroe Islands. Found in most of Asia to
China and Japan. |

yellow-pollination on rear wing below, missing
silver spots. Without green roots (basal)
pollination and reduced drawings. Is seldom
found in southern Scandinavia, more frequent in
southern Europe. Is dominant in the Balkans and
Greece. In the Pyrenees it is replaced with
transitional form cleodippe. |

underside is reduced silver or yellow spots with
black heart near the base of the middle cell.
Form; eris missing silver
spots.
Distribution; found from southern Scandinavia,
and from Spain through Europe to the Middle East,
Iran, Central Asia, Mongolia and the Amur. Not
found in England, Ireland, northern Scandinavia
and Iceland. Deficiencies in the islands of the
Mediterranean, except Sicily. |
