Speckled Clouded Yellow, Colias christophi (Grum-Grshimailo, 1885).

Hiroaki Takenouchi: Colias christophi, one of the most unusual looking Colias species, a high-altitude (3,600masl) scree specialist, and the one I really wanted to see. Kyrgyzstan, 10 July 2023. Thank you Nic!

Description: Colias christophi has quite an exceptional aspect among Colias, the costal basal area having a peculiar reddish-brown colour, and the submarginal spots of the forewing being extraordinarily large and almost white, forming a continuous band which is traversed by the narrowly black veins. The hindwing is dark, feebly greenish with a white middle spot and a band of white submarginal spots. The underside is grey green, with a black middle spot on the forewing and a white one on the hindwing. The female differs only in the somewhat larger light submarginal spots on both wings.

Habitat: sunny, watchful stone valleys in the High Mountains with spectacles of Astragalus spp. Altitude: 2500-3900m.

Flight: End of june to midle july.

Foodplants: Astragalus spp. or Oxytropis pamiro-altaica.

Distribution: It is found in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

GBIF: Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

Hiroaki Takenouchi: Even if you can't see the glorious deep orange on the upperside, a fresh Colias eogene is a very pretty butterfly. They seem to reflect the sunlight much more strongly than the grass and normally very bright dandelion flowers so I needed to tone down the surrounding in this photo to appreciate the colours of the buttefly.
Seen at 3,550masl in Kyrgyzstan, 12 July 2023.
