quite an exceptional aspect among Colias,
the costal basal area having a peculiar
reddish-brown colour, and the submarginal
spots of the forewing being
extraordinarily large and almost white,
forming a continuous band which is
traversed by the narrowly black veins.
The hindwing is dark, feebly greenish
with a white middle spot and a band of
white submarginal spots. The underside is
grey green, with a black middle spot on
the forewing and a white one on the
hindwing. The female differs only in the
somewhat larger light submarginal spots
on both wings.

Italian Marbled White,
Melanargia arge
(Sulzer, 1776).
Appearance: Upper side white only the
submarginal ventral line, the two short
bands in the middle and apex of the cell,
and the beautifully blue-centred eyes/ocelli
are dark - ab. caeca
Stgr. is without ocelli;
rare among the preceding.
Habitat and behavior: Open hills and
slopes dominated by grass. Like all Melanargia,
it is strongly attracted to flowers.
Flight time: It flies from May to June.
Host plants: Ampelodesmos
mauritanicus,
Stipa pennata
and other grasses,
Poaceae.
Distribution: It is an endemic species
found only in the southern half of Italy
and the eastern half of the Italian
island of Sicily.
It may be an evolutionary intermediate
between the western and the Italian
marbled white, M.
occitanica
& M. arge,
as it shows intermediate features of both
species and the range is between the two
species (Spain and mainland Italy).

the meticulous content covers everything
from a species appearance to its
distribution and habits, illustrated with
photos of the male, female, eggs,
caterpillars and host plants, together
with flight period charts and

Northern
Brown Argus unknown aberration found
and photographed by
Svend Rastrup Andersen at Tornby
Strand, Vendsyssel, Denmark June
17th 2020.
The ventral side of fore-
and hindwing is dominated by the white
color normally seen in the white and
blackcentered white spots. The brown or
grey color, normally dominating the
underside of both wings is here reduced
and concentrated around the wing nerves.
This aberration lacks, on the ventral
side, the white and blackcentered white
spots as well as the black Vs
around the orange marginal spots. The
dorsal side of the wings are normal.
Named July 8th 2020 by Svend

Green-banded
Urania, Urania
leilus
(Linnaeus, 1758).
Swallowtail moths / Sunset moths, is a
day-flying moth of the family Uraniidae. Superfamily Geometroidea.
Habitats and behaviors: The habitat
consists of riverbanks in primary and
secondary rainforest and cultivated area
at elevations between sea level and about
800 m (2,600 ft). Often seen by ravines
with streams that cross country roads
where they suck on urine-tainted ground,
or at the edges of drying pools.
Foodplant: feed exclusively on species of
the toxic spurge Omphalea.
Distribution: It is found in tropical
South America east of the Andes,
including Suriname, French Guiana,
eastern Colombia, Venezuela, eastern
Ecuador, Brazil, northern Bolivia,
eastern Peru, and Trinidad. Are local
common in Caranavi to Santa Fe, 2000 ft
altitude belongs Rio Coroico and Rio
Broncini. Yungas, Bolivia.
It has been recorded as a migrant to the
central and northern Lesser Antilles such
as St. Kitts, Barbados and Dominica.
There are two Urania species commonly seen in
the Amazonian region - U.
leilus
and U. fulgens. The latter species is
scarcer and differs in that it lacks the
outermost green bands on the forewings,
and has reduced green markings on the
hindwings.

in thick woods where it often flies high
at tree-top level patrolling paths and
ridges. Males often settle high up with
head down readily chasing off intruders.
Also seen in cultivated areas along roads
and bridges over riwerstreams.

is not known to nectar at flowers.
Larval Foodplants: Eggs are laid singly

The occurrence
of a taxon morphologically close to Pseudolucia
jujuyensis (Bálint, Eisele &
Johnson, 2000) is recorded in dry
habitats of Torotoro Dinosaurs National
Park, Potosí, Bolivia. This record
remarkably extends the range of Pseudolucia by almost 800 km
northwards in austral South America.
Five specimens were available for
examinations, hence wing-pattern,
genitalia and mitochondrial DNA were
analysed. However, the taxonomy of the
specimens could not be satisfactorily
resolved in relation to P.
jujuyensis, for which only the
holotype exists.
The females use Cuscuta for ovipositing,
what is supposedly the larval host
a remarkable character of the chilensis
species group of Pseudolucia, which includes P.
jujuyensis. On the basis of
molecular markers it was revealed that
the Torotoro population is the sister to
the rest of the chilensis species group,
which together are the clade sister to
the rest of the genus.
