Butterflies of Northern Europe is a unique, comprehensive reference work that fits in your pocket

october 9, 2022

The app contains detailed descriptions of the 168 butterfly species found in northern Europe, from northern France in the south to Greenland in the north.
Written by butterfly experts
Lars Andersen and John Vergo, the meticulous content covers everything from a species’ appearance to its distribution and habits, illustrated with photos of the male, female, eggs, caterpillars and host plants, together with flight period charts and distribution maps.

The 31 comparison panels show different but easily confused species side by side, and their distinguishing characteristics are highlighted and described with hitherto unseen precision in over 300 photos with arrowed references and captions.

Northern Brown Argus unknown aberration found and photographed by
Svend Rastrup Andersen at Tornby Strand, Vendsyssel, Denmark June 17th 2020.

The ventral side of fore- and hindwing is dominated by the white color normally seen in the white and blackcentered white spots. The brown or grey color, normally dominating the underside of both wings is here reduced and concentrated around the wing nerves.

This aberration lacks, on the ventral side, the white and blackcentered white spots as well as the black V’s around the orange marginal spots. The dorsal side of the wings are normal.

Named
July 8th 2020 by Svend Rastrup Andersen and Lars Andersen:

Pseudolucia toroto (Guerra & Siebel, 2016). Torotoro Dinosaurs National Park, Potosí, Bolivia d. 2 may 2016. Photographer; Gottfried Siebel

The occurrence of a taxon morphologically close to Pseudolucia jujuyensis (Bálint, Eisele & Johnson, 2000) is recorded in dry habitats of Torotoro Dinosaurs National Park, Potosí, Bolivia. This record remarkably extends the range of Pseudolucia by almost 800 km northwards in austral South America.
Five specimens were available for examinations, hence wing-pattern, genitalia and mitochondrial DNA were analysed. However, the taxonomy of the specimens could not be satisfactorily resolved in relation to
P. jujuyensis, for which only the holotype exists.
The females use Cuscuta for ovipositing, what is supposedly the larval host – a remarkable character of the chilensis species group of
Pseudolucia, which includes P. jujuyensis. On the basis of molecular markers it was revealed that the Torotoro population is the sister to the rest of the chilensis species group, which together are the clade sister to the rest of the genus.

Adults are on wing year round. They have the longest insect
proboscis in the world, and nectar from deep-throated flowers as Angel's Trumpet, Brugmansia arborea while hovering in the air.

Anaxagorea crassipetala, a lowland rain forest tree of Costa Rica and surrounding areas,
and probably other members of the
Annonaceae family.
